Explore the World's Third Tallest Fountain: The Port Fountain in Karachi
The Port Fountain, also known as the Karachi Port Trust Fountain, is a breathtaking sight located in the city of Karachi, Pakistan. This magnificent structure stands tall next to the northern rock of the Oyster Rocks, a series of islands situated off the Karachi Harbour. As the world's third tallest fountain, it rises to a height of 620 feet (190 m) when operating at full capacity, making it an impressive sight to behold.Since its inauguration on January 15, 2006, the Port Fountain has been a popular tourist attraction, drawing visitors from all over Pakistan. The fountain's platform, which measures 135 square meters (15 m x 9 m), is supported by 16 piles that are 18 meters deep. The fountain is powered by two 835 horsepower (623 kW) turbine pumps, which deliver nearly 2000 liters of sea water per second at a velocity of 70 meters per second through specially designed 8-inch (200 mm) nozzles. This remarkable feat of engineering was constructed at a cost of PKR 320 million (approximately $5.3 million US).
The height of the Port Fountain means that it is easily visible from many parts of the city, including high-rise apartments and buildings, as well as the surrounding community at the beach. In fact, the column of water can be seen from several miles out at sea. To ensure that the fountain does not interfere with the beach-side homes, it is located 1.4 km away from the beach. The maximum vapors from the fountain travel up to a radius of 500 feet (150 m) around the structure. At night, the fountain is illuminated by 18 flood lights of 400 watts, adding to its already impressive beauty.
The Port Fountain is a true marvel of modern engineering and a must-see attraction for anyone visiting Karachi. Its breathtaking height, stunning display of water and light, and location near the sea make it an unforgettable sight to behold. Whether you are a resident of Karachi or simply passing through, be sure to add the Port Fountain to your list of places to visit.
