K-2: The Challenging and Dangerous Second Highest Peak in the World in Pakistan
K-2, also known as Mount Godwin-Austen or Chhogori, is the second highest peak in the world, located in the Karakoram range in Pakistan. Standing at 8,611 meters (28,251 feet) tall, it is only exceeded in height by Mount Everest.
The peak was first surveyed in 1856 by British surveyors, but it wasn't until 1902 that the mountain was given the name "K-2" by the British. The "K" stands for Karakoram, while the "2" indicates that it was the second peak listed in the survey.
K-2 is considered one of the most challenging and dangerous peaks to climb in the world. The steep and unforgiving terrain, combined with unpredictable weather conditions, make it a formidable challenge for even the most experienced climbers. Despite this, many climbers have attempted to conquer K-2, with the first successful ascent being made in 1954 by an Italian expedition.
The climbing season for K-2 is typically from June to August. The most commonly used route to the summit is the Abruzzi Spur, which starts from the south side of the mountain. However, other routes have also been attempted, including the Northwest Ridge and the Chinese Route.
The death rate for climbing K-2 is about one in four, making it one of the deadliest peaks in the world. The peak has claimed the lives of many experienced climbers, including several who were considered among the best in the world. The harsh conditions, combined with the altitude, can quickly turn a climbing expedition into a deadly situation.
Despite the dangers, many climbers continue to be drawn to the challenge of K-2. The mountain remains a symbol of human determination and the never-ending pursuit of adventure. With its stunning views and the sense of accomplishment that comes with reaching the summit, climbing K-2 is an experience that few will ever forget.
